1626 - Peter Minuit, a Dutch colonist, landed on the island of MANHATTAN. He eventually bought the island from the Indians for beads and trinkets that were worth about $24.
(That translates to about $1,000 in modern U.S. dollars. Which is still nothing, especially considering that a studio apartment on that island rents for at least twice that per month.)
1959 - The FIRST ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS were held. There were two simultaneous, untelevised ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York . . . because they didn't think recording artists would want to travel just to get an award.
