Black Keys: Method to the madness

Four months ago, The Black Keys released their seventh studio album, El Camino. In an interview with The Huffington Post, frontman Dan Auerbach says that when it comes to recording new material, the guitarist and his band mate Pat Carney don’t believe in writing anything in advance before hitting the studio.

“We just put our heads down and we plow through it,” says Auerbach about the band’s recording process. “We don’t really know what we have until we're done. We don’t talk about it ahead of time, we don't do rehearsals or demos or anything. We get into the studio and we start…making it up....We let it go that way naturally and we don’t have a feel for a record ahead of time.”

The guitarist added that the duo would love to spend more time in the studio, churning out new albums and experimenting with their sound. “Making albums is really fun,” he explains. “Getting into the studio and just making up songs is fun, I don’t know. We could make a different kind of record every week. This week I may be listening to one thing or get inspired by something else. So week to week, our tastes can change.”

In other Black Keys news, the band will be headlining this year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The Keys will perform on two consecutive Fridays: April 13 and 20. They'll be joined on the bill by the Arctic Monkeys, Madness, Jimmy Cliff and others.
