Dave comes clean

On Friday, Disturbed's David Draiman admitted he overdosed earlier this year on allergy meds. He said, "I'd been having allergy shot therapy, and in the middle of the touring cycle an injection that was supposed to be administered at 0.05 of a particular concentration was injected at 0.5 - 10 times more than I was supposed to get. I had severe anaphylactic shock. Airwaves constricted, blood pressure plummeting. I was on oxygen for hours and still my blood pressure was way, way low. This was the day before we were supposed to play three shows in a row and the residual inflammation that came from the allergic reaction meant that I couldn't heal from it in the middle of the touring cycle. My vocal cords were pretty beaten up: seeing them on a stroboscope was pretty scary. They told me if I sang I'd be risking permanent damage."

Adios!

Drummer Mike Portnoy is no longer with Avenged Sevenfold. He says, "Sadly my time with Avenged Sevenfold has come to an end. The band has decided to carry on into 2011 without me. I had a great time with them throughout 2010, but it was their choice to end the relationship at the end of 2010 as was the initial plan. I had an awesome time on stage with the guys every night and have so many cool memories from the experience with them. I am proud to always be part of the Avenged Sevenfold family and history. I also adore the Avenged Sevenfold fans and totally appreciate the way they welcomed me aboard and were so loving and supportive during my time with the band... thank you!"

On Tour

Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison plans to tour with Rob Zombie. Zombie says, "Our drummer told us he was quitting right before the tour, that's true. I was like, 'Hey, thanks!'. He's been with us for five years and then he quits with no warning. We called up Joey and asked if he knew anyone and he was like, 'I'll do it!'. It was sort of a downtime for his band and he's been with us ever since. Then the Murderdolls album came out and I thought well, he's going to do that and he's like, 'No, I'll do that too,' so we'll see if he likes doing two shows a night. On paper a great idea, but let's see how it translates after a few weeks of shows."

Super Top Secret Shows

Avenged Sevenfold recently flew to Iraq's warzone where they played a series of top secret shows. Lead singer Matt Shadows says playing for the troops was "best experience" of his life. "Iraq, it was unbelievable. The troops are out in the middle of this s**thole and they were so grateful and so excited to have us there. They're on these bases living in tents and getting mortars shot at them every night, and then they're like, 'Avenged Sevenfold's here playing a show for us!'. It's one of those things where if it makes them excited for one night at least and gives them something they can talk about as friends and brothers and sisters out there, then we've totally done our job. It was the best experience I've ever had in my life."

Pricey Xmas

Christmas came in extravagant fashion to the Muslim desert emirate of Abu Dhabi as a glitzy hotel unveiled a bejewelled Christmas tree valued at more than 11 million dollars on Wednesday. It is the "most expensive Christmas tree ever," with a "value of over 11 million dollars," said Hans Olbertz, general manager of Emirates Palace hotel, at its inauguration. The 13-metre (40-foot) faux evergreen, located in the gold leaf-bedecked rotunda of the hotel, is decorated with silver and gold bows, ball-shaped ornaments and small white lights. But the necklaces, earrings and other jewellery draped around the tree's branches are what give it a record value. It holds a total of 181 diamonds, pearls, emeralds, sapphires and other precious stones, said Khalifa Khouri, owner of Style Gallery, which provided the jewellery. "The tree itself is about 10,000 dollars," Olbertz said. "The jewellery has a value of over 11 million dollars -- I think 11.4, 11.5." This will probably be an entry into the Guinness book of world records, Olbertz said, adding that Emirates Palace planned to contact the organisation about the tree which is to stay until the end of the year. The tree is not the first extravagant offering from Emirates Palace -- The hotel, which bills itself as seven-star, in February introduced a package for a seven-day stay priced at one million dollars. Takers of the package have a private butler and a chauffeur driven Maybach luxury car at their disposal during their stay, as well as a private jet available for trips to other countries in the region. And in May, the hotel opened a gold vending machine, becoming the first place outside Germany to install "gold to go, the world's first gold vending machine," said Ex Oriente Lux AG, the German company behind the machine.
